If our economy has only taught many of us one thing, it’s that we cannot make it in this world alone; at some point we will need the help of others.  As strong as my credentials were when I got laid off on 9/30/2009, there was no way I would’ve rebounded with a better job in just nine weeks without the help of others.

Some people find it easy to ask for help, while others really struggle with this.  Regardless of which side of this coin you fall on, there’s one thing both sides should have in common once they’ve received help – be sure to say thanks.

For all you who have “been through it” in your career within the past 3-5 years, I’m sure there’s someone who has been in your corner along the way.  For every person coming to mind right now, make it a top priority to thank them this week.  If you’re struggling to think of some people to thank, let me give you a few ideas:

  • Family who gave you unconditional love and maybe a place to stay
  • Friends who listened to you complain about your job, then complain when the job went away
  • Spiritual leader who prayed for you when you couldn’t or didn’t know how
  • Your network of people who passed along job search tips and information about job opportunities along with your resume to the right person
  • References who put in a good word for you, even if you weren’t their star performer
  • Mentors who helped you navigate the pitfalls …. or at least made the landings softer
  • Current and/or former coworkers who made the bad days a little more bearable
  • Bosses who inspired you to do your best or frustrated you to move to a better opportunity
  • Others that you know are “thanks” worthy

Thanks for reading.

Until next time….
