“Now, THIS is how you send a networking message in LinkedIn!”  This is what I thought to myself after reading the message that was sent to me from an aspiring professional (aspiring to get a new job!) a few days ago.  I won’t mention any specifics about the person, but if you are looking to make a splash with someone on LinkedIn, she showed how to do it.

Considering I was an early adopter of LinkedIn and made their 2012 list for being one of the top 1% most viewed LinkedIn profiles, I have received A LOT of invites and messages.  But, I have never received one like the one below.  She not only made me applaud, I responded and am in the process of scheduling a time for us to connect……so we can help EACH OTHER.

If you want to know how to network via LinkedIn, this is a very good start!  There’s no guarantee that it will work with everyone, but it most certainly will grab attention.  Enjoy the read.

Hi Bernie,

I hope that all things are well for you in 2014.

I’m sending this candid message for two reasons. First, to thank you for being a part of my LinkedIn network! Second, to ask for your professional support and expertise. I am looking for a new job, BUT instead of seeing how you can help me, I thought I would first see if there’s a project that you’re working on where my skills might be of help to you? Is there a deadline that you’re concerned about honoring? Tight on budget, yet don’t have enough project resources? Need to complete some research? Of course, I’m offering my skills as a volunteer, in hopes that you’ll ultimately be willing and able to refer, recommend, vouch and share your resources as I job search for my next best-fit role. Without question I’d also be happy to offer you a personal introduction to my network.

In terms of skill set, quickly, I’m versatile in that I’ve worked in numerous industries, ranging from IT to higher education to corporate marketing. My most transferable skills are that I’m a strong presenter and communicator both orally and in print. I’m solid at coordinating projects, data analysis, building relationships, serving as a liaison between teams/departments and I’m detailed, organized and hell-on-wheels about follow-thru. I am also bilingual and speak/read/write Spanish. Finally, I do have experience in handling budgets over $1 million. I’m also proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and adapt easily to new software programs.

With all of that said, I’m again asking for your help on my job search. But first, how can I help you?

Best,

Now, please don’t send me a similar type of email because I can’t respond to everyone, but I do encourage you to consider this type of introduction the next time you reach out to someone for help.

Until next time….
